Would you like to be involved in dormouse conservation in Hampshire?
Would you like to be involved in a pioneering County survey, by looking at your local patch?
Would you like to gain experience of a new survey methodology, using footprint tunnels?
The Hampshire County Dormouse Survey needs your help!
We are developing a systematic survey of the County, using footprint tunnels, which do not require a dormouse licence to check for dormouse presence.
We are looking for volunteers who could survey a 4km2 square local to them, for suitable habitat for dormice. Once suitable areas have been found, landowner permission would need to be granted. You will then receive 30 footprint tunnels to set up on your site, which will need to be in place up to 10weeks, or until dormouse presence is confirmed. This technique gives a 97% chance of detecting dormice if they are present.
We were hoping to launch the project this year, but unfortunately due to the current Covid-19 restrictions, this has not been possible. However, we will be testing the process and methodology in September/ October 2020, with the aim of rolling out the full survey in May 2021.
Please see presentation document here for a summary of the project. We will be updating this page over the next few weeks with further documents and information about how you can get involved, so please check back.
